The preservation and development of a society's cultural and moral values depend on intergenerational relationships and the respect shown within these relationships. Respect for the Elderly Week is a meaningful week celebrated to reinforce these values and show the necessary care for elderly individuals. The events and awareness-raising activities organised throughout this week aim to increase respect and gratitude for the elderly in all segments of society. The importance of Respect for the Elderly Week lies primarily in understanding the value that elderly individuals contribute to society. The elderly guide younger generations with the knowledge, experience and expertise they have acquired throughout their lives. The stories, experiences and lessons they pass on broaden young people's perspectives on life and contribute to their becoming more conscious individuals. Respect for the elderly is, in fact, respect for society's past, cultural heritage and shared values. Another important aim of this week is to strengthen social solidarity and unity. Older individuals are among the most vulnerable segments of society. It is our social responsibility to help them cope with difficulties such as loneliness, health problems and social isolation. Respect for the Elderly Week is a period when this responsibility is remembered and efforts are made to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Young people spending time with the elderly, being sensitive to their needs and offering social support strengthens the bond between generations and creates a stronger sense of solidarity in society. Respect for the Elderly Week is also of great importance in terms of drawing attention to the rights of the elderly and raising social awareness on this issue. Finally, showing respect to the elderly is also important in terms of maintaining and raising the general moral level of society. Respect and love for the elderly have a positive impact on society as a whole and set an example for younger generations. In this way, more respectful, sensitive and empathetic individuals are raised for the future. With these feelings, thoughts and aims, the Gerontology Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University, represented by Lecturers Muhammed AKBAŞ and Sevda BURAK, held a Respect for the Elderly Event at OMÜ Foundation College on 10 June 2024 between 13:00 and 15:00. The event included introductory and warm-up activities, effective communication skills with the elderly, and art workshops featuring activities such as painting, poetry, and storytelling performed by the students. As the Gerontology Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ondokuz Mayıs University, we hope that showing respect for the elderly is not limited to just one week, but rather a continuous attitude throughout life.
