About Us
The Department of Gerontology was established by a letter dated 6 April 2020 and numbered 25187 from the Presidency of the Higher Education Council, and has not yet admitted any students. The department has one academic staff member and two teaching staff members. Healthy ageing, living, ageing and old age are studied under the umbrella of the science of gerontology. The term 'gerontology' literally means 'the science of ageing'. Contrary to popular belief, it deals not only with the elderly but with the entire ageing process, which begins at birth, i.e., life as a whole. With the increase in the elderly population, the concepts of active ageing and quality of life in old age have become increasingly important. The elderly need social support not only for their physical health but also to be able to continue their lives without being isolated from social life and dependent on others. However, there is a need for well-equipped health professionals who can support active and healthy ageing during this special period of life. Therefore, the development of the elderly population and all individuals in the age group to ideal standards socially, psychologically, economically, culturally and medically, and ensuring that this level is maintained, is essential for the future of our country and the world. This development and its continuation will only be possible through the work of well-educated gerontologists. Gerontologists are valued as managers who are needed for their knowledge and experience at every level of community management, not only as consultants but also as those who produce and implement policies. Graduates of our Gerontology department will be able to work in institutions catering to the elderly, such as care homes, nursing homes, geriatric centres in hospitals, banks (pension insurance), and tourism (health hotels), after obtaining the title of "gerontologist".
